SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises)

Small and medium-sized enterprises: businesses with fewer than 250 employees.

SMEs make up a large part of the Dutch economy. These businesses often have no marketing department of their own, so they look for simple, complete solutions.

What does this mean in practice?

Under the European definition, a business counts as an SME if it has fewer than 250 employees and stays within certain limits for turnover or balance sheet total. Within the SME category there are micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees), small enterprises (fewer than 50) and medium-sized enterprises (fewer than 250).

Why does this matter for your business?

SMEs rarely have their own marketer. They want results and predictable costs, without hassle. The owner usually makes the decisions.

Examples and best practices

  • Choose complete solutions, so you don't have to arrange everything yourself.
  • Look for predictable costs, with no surprises afterwards.
  • Check whether there are schemes or grants for digitalisation, for example through your industry association or the KvK (Netherlands Chamber of Commerce).
  • Start small and expand as your business grows.
