DNS

The system that translates a domain name into the address of the server where your website is hosted.

DNS works like the internet's phone book. Correct DNS settings are needed for your website and business email to work properly.

What does this mean in practice?

DNS (Domain Name System) translates a domain name such as jouwbedrijf.nl into the address of the server where your website or e-mail runs. DNS records determine where website traffic goes (A record), where your e-mail arrives (MX record) and how e-mail senders are verified (SPF and DKIM).

Why does this matter for your business?

A single wrong DNS setting can make your website unreachable or stop emails from arriving. DNS changes take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to take effect everywhere. So plan them carefully.

Examples and best practices

  • Moving to a different hosting provider? Then update the A or CNAME records.
  • Set up the MX records according to your email provider's instructions.
  • Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your email.
  • Note down the old settings before you change anything.

How we do it at Ikoon

Because Ikoon hosts your website, we make sure your domain points to your new website at go-live. Hosting costs €35 per month, including SSL, daily backups and updates. So you don't need to know the technical details. With the Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 module, you can also sort out your business email.
