CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

A metric for how much the elements of a page shift while it loads.

Shifting buttons and text lead to mis-clicks. A stable layout gives a better experience and a better rating from Google.

What does this mean in practice?

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures how much the elements of a page shift while it loads. For example, text that suddenly jumps down because an image, banner or advert appears. It is the third Core Web Vital.

Why does this matter for your business?

A shifting layout leads to mis-clicks and irritation. According to Google, a good score is lower than 0.1. A stable layout means a better experience and a better rating in Google.

Examples and best practices

  • Give all images and videos fixed dimensions.
  • Reserve space for banners and embedded content.
  • Load fonts in a way that doesn't make the text shift.
  • Don't add content above text that is already on screen.

How we do it at Ikoon

When designing and building your custom Ikoon website, we reserve space for images and other elements that load later. That way, the layout stays put while the page loads.
